Girl Geeks at Podcamp Toronto!

This past weekend fellow girl geeks and I hit the 401 and made the trip down to Toronto for Canada’s largest Podcamp. 1400 people registered for the free 2 day event that included 6 (!)tracks of talks on things like Podcasting, Social Media best practices, Blogging, Building Products and more.  We even had our own hashtag: #girlgeekroadtrip (what would a geek trip be without a hashtag 😉

One of the highlights of the weekend was when us Montrealers all ended up in a session called “ROI-GTFO” (that’s ‘Get the F*** out’, for the acronym-challenged) only to find NO ONE in the room. Looks like people took it literally.

It seems though, a couple of mics is all you really need because next thing you know we were doing an impromptu podcast with Sylvain Grandmaison and Laurent Lasalle as the hosts. The topic- “What is a social media douchebag”.  A hot topic these days and one that garnered a lot of responses from the audience! podcamp toronto 2011 - 18

Through our tweets, other attendees got wind of the impromptu podcast and it wasn’t before long there was an interactive audience and more interviewees. Good times! I’ll be sure to share the link once it is up.

Another talk that I really enjoyed was ‘The Internet is Not Made of Hugs” whose basic premise was that providing constructive criticism is essential. Often members of online and offline communities  are quick to ‘High 5/Awesome’  ideas that may not be so awesome and avoid giving constructive feedback that is necessary to actually get things done. #nohugs
